The new Special Edition of Detective Comics #27 (which has 3 slightly different covers) commemorating Batman's first appearance features contributions from many great artists, including Kelly Jones who did a killer pinup of Mr. JPV himself. So, he sort of has made an appearance in the New 52. Sort of. DC just needs to swallow their pride, pay Quesada his royalties and bring this character back in the New 52.

So this is a real treat. Most don't know this, but I was actually a journalist for almost 10 years. Keeping that in mind, with last year being the 20th anniversary of Knightfall I actually tried to contact Joe Quesada, the creator of Azrael for an interview. Unfortunatly I never got a response. However, the renowned Kevin Smith of the ever popular 'Fatman on Batman' Podcast recently did an incredible in-depth interview with the man himself. It truly is a wonderful hour of listening. If you own the whole Azrael series like I do you may have possibly already read this one. At the end of Issue #3 from April 1995, DC reprinted a fan chat that Dennis O'Neil and Archie Goodwin did with fans from a few weeks prior to the release of the first issue. It looks like we have an official release time as January 2014 for the Michael Lane Azrael figure from the upcoming Arkham City Origins line from Mattel. It will be part of the 'Multiverse Wave 1' series and can be pre-ordered from Entertaiment Earth for 11.99 here, or from Big Bad Toy Store for 9.99 here.

I know I may be a bit late on this since the Bat-related big news from San Diego Comic-Con has been the Superman Batman movie and all the big hoopla over Ben Affleck as Batman (Congats to you batfleck), but according to Toy Ark's coverage of the event, we'll have not 1, but 3 new Azrael figures from Mattel! There will be a Knightquest/Knightsend (Blue Suit) version of Jean Paul Valley as Batman, and a Knightsend version (Red suit). Sadly, it doesn't look like there will be a new JPV in classic Azrael garb, or the other two suits he wore in his solo series which have yet to be officially made into figures. Mattel will also be putting out a Michael Lane version of Azrael as part of an Arkham City figures line. As soon as release dates and pre-order dates are released I'll be sure to post the links here. Ever since DC's reboot of The New 52 many fans have been wondering whether or not Azrael was going to be making an appearance and, if so, which version would we get? Well kiddies, according to Rich Johnston at Bleeding Cool, the Michael Lane version of Azrael will be making his first appearance in Issue 10 of Batman Incorporated. Can't say as a fan of the original JPV Azrael I'm not a little disappointed. Here's to hoping DC somehow brings back the awkward blonde mopped JPV soon!
